OUTDOORS AND GARDEN
Situated on a green hillside, the garden has lawns and terraces which lead down to forest and fields below. It is peaceful, private and idyllic here, with wonderful views from every point over Covas valley and the hills. Around the house are lawns, an al-fresco dining and barbeque area, whilst the pool looks over the terraces. The garden has citrus trees, camelias, agapanthas, jasmine and wild flowers to attract butterflies. Our organic vegetable garden and orchard is fed by spring water, and we love the old olive trees, which have given the name to Casa das Oliveiras (House of Olive Trees).

There is even table football in the winery games room! Although built on a hillside, there are granite steps all around the house, making access easier. The main lawn/barbeque/outside dining/pool are all on one flat terrace by the house. However, due to the steps inside and outside and the steep slope, the property is not suitable for wheelchairs or those with limited mobility.
LOCATION
Natural setting
Beaches/Coastal, Countryside, Cultural/Historic, Forests, Hills, Nature Reserves, Rivers, Vineyards, Villages

The Alto Minho region where we are located is a lovely area- scenic, charming, unspoilt, rural, green and hilly. Around us are small hamlets, gushing rivers, green fields and pine forests. Up in the granite hills there are old granite villages and very traditional farming practices. On the banks of the nearby Minho river are charming small market towns such as Caminha, Cerveira, Valença and Monçao. The coast is only 20 minutes away, with long sandy beaches at Moledo and Afife (note that the water is cool here, being the Atlantic). South of us are the charming towns of Ponte de Lima and Viana do Castelo. Inland is mountainous Peneda Geres national park. As day trips, the region of Galicia in Spain is also highly recommended- Baiona bay, Cies islands, Santiago cathedral, Guarda and Vigo fishing ports. If you visit between June and September, you'll have the chance to go to many of the local folk festivals held in local villages.

Birding, Hiking

This is a great area for outdoor sporting pursuits. Lovely walks or mountain biking through the countryside and forests can be done right from the house. The Serra d'Arga, Peneda Geres and many other hills are ideal for hiking and exploring. Being unspoilt and natural, there is a wide varierty of birdlife, and the lucky few may spot wild boar. The Minho river is broad and calm, thus good for kayaking (with an excursion company at Foz do Minho). For those into surfing and kitesurfing, the best beaches include Cabedelo at Viana do Castelo and Afife (40 min drive) and Moledo (25 min drive). Friends of ours organise horse-riding, boating and cycling tours of the local area.

Perfect break for family and friends
By: Nick   From: UK   Visited: 05/2009
Casa Das Oliveiras proved to be a relaxing location for our May holiday. We stayed with friends and found it both spacious and welcoming. Picturesque views of the valley provided a backdrop to the barbeque and pool facilities, which were first class. I personally enjoy a work out first thing in the morning and was delighted to discover an exercise room in the basement. We made several trips out to local beaches and into the hills, and one trip to Spain. We very much hope to return again soon!

fantastic family hideaway
By: Nibbs   From: UK   Visited: 05/2009
We had a wonderful holiday at Casa Das Oliveiras - it was perfect for family and friends. This is a real home from home, beautifully renovated, with everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The kids loved the house, the gardens and pool (and we liked the fact that the pool was fenced off); we and our friends loved barbeques on the terrace, enjoying the views with a glass of local wine. We enjoyed a day in Spain, trips to local beaches and walks in the local hills. Thank you for a lovely holiday!

Owner feedback:
We're so pleased you and the kids had a great time! Looking forward to seeing you again in June 2012!

By: Bird   From: England   Visited: 08/2009
What a fantastic place to holiday. After one day here we were so relaxed we felt like we had been on holiday for a week! The Villa is beautiful as are the gardens and the whole place is well kept and run. KatieThank you for creating this little paradise! We feel like we have been on a different planet all week. The house has such a lovely feel and you have thought of everything in terms of a hotel like experience ie, little gym (unused!), pool and pool house, bbq, bar - just perfect!!

Owner feedback:

Peaceful Setting
By: Rio   From: Brazil   Visited: 08/2011
We spent a wonderful week here in Covas. The house has fantastic views across the valley, which is peaceful and rural. You can watch the locals tend their fields or goats, or pop down to Fontela's cafe for some portguese hospitality and food. The beaches are beautiful and surprisingly uncrowded. Would recommend this as a holiday destination. We are a family with three children under the age of 10.

Owner feedback:
Thanks so much for your comments- we're pleased you had such a wonderful time. We, the goats and Fontela's are all waiting for your imminent return!

GUEST BOOK COMMENTS
Joachim and Nicole. July 2011. "We had two wonderful weeks in Casa das Oliveiras. The kitchen with the open space is a big advantage. It was nice to eat outside and we had some barbeques. Enjoyed the stunning view over the valley and the pool. A very special experience was our trip to the small wild river. We also recommend Ponte de Lima, Guimarães, Caminha, Porto."
August 2010. Kent family. "We will miss having breakfast on the balcony, listening to church chimes and watching the locals in the fields. It has been a wonderful and restful holiday."
July 2010. Dancy family. "We've loved our time in Portugal, discovering a beautiful region and their wines. The boys have loved the swimming pool and garden, grandparents loved hiding away and reading and we've loved the spectacular views!"

OWNERS PROFILE

About
We came to live in Portugal in 1993, when my late husband, Roy, took up a job with Taylor’s Port in Porto. A couple of years after we arrived, we bought a ruined farmhouse in the Minho, which we gradually restored. This became our weekend house, a place we loved coming up to, with beautiful scenery and rural tranquility. We retired up here in 2004. Roy called this area paradise, and with total tranquility, barbeques by the pool, Taylor's Vintage Port and Chelsea on TV, maybe he was right! I love living here in the countryside of north-west Portugal. It is a beautiful area, with lovely villages and friendly people. I especially enjoy gardening, walking in the hills, seeing my friends in the vicinity and receiving friends and family throughout the year.

What is special about the property
Casa das Oliveiras is ideal for groups (up to 9 people) who are looking for a place to stay in the scenic countryside of north-west Portugal. The views of the Arga hills and Covas valley are magnificent. The gardens spread out along terraces at different levels, with lots of space. There is a pool, barbeque and outdoor dining area, ideal for spending time outdoors. The house is full of character, with wood, granite and features like the old grape press; as well as all the comforts of a renovated house. Having young grand-children, we put in security fencing and gates indoors and out. Indoors, the hub is the kitchen, dining area and living room, all adjoining and leading out on to balconies and the garden. Guests come here to unwind, escape, enjoy the outdoors and explore the area.

What is great about the location
This is a beautiful area, year-round, and ideal for those who love the outdoors and staying in untouristy areas. The Alto Minho in north-west Portugal is considered by many Portuguese to be the most beautiful region in the country, and what we love is the variety- hills, forests, rivers and a beautiful coastline all on our doorstep, as in Galicia in Spain. Nature, tranquility, local tradition and the great outdoors reign here.
