For those wanting to explore, bring a car. There is much to see and do in the area- and an ideal sort of place for those who enjoy scenic views, vineyards, going through small hillside villages. The river road is just below the hotel, and it leads on to Pinhão, where you can cross the river and hop on to one of the small boats which take tours further up-river (generally leaving mid-morning and in the early afternoon, with a choice of vintage boats, a yacht and traditional wine barrel-transporting barcos rabelos). The area is ideal for gentle walks as well as more rigorous hikes and mountain biking (bikes are available at hotel).

Being in a wine-region, vineyard visits and wine-tasting are a highlight. At the Quinta, you're free to walk around the vineyards at will and they also do wine tastings. In the old winery downstairs is a well-stocked wine shop. Harvest-time, with trucks carrying baskets of grapes and the treading of the grapes in some of the old cellars, is a great time to visit. In the small villages, you'll see local rural life, still very authentic and down-to-earth.

"We spent two nights at this lovely Quinta and used it as a base for exploring the Douro Valley wine region. The hotel itself is impeccable, and, as we were traveling in the off-season, we had it almost entirely to ourselves. The staff was extremely helpful, and arranged our visits to the best of the nearby quintas for tours and tastings. Be aware that the driveway from the hotel to the main road is very narrow and includes many hairpin curves. For this reason, we opted to have dinner at the hotel each night instead of trying to navigate the road in the dark. But our meals were delicious and we were happy to just retire to our room at the end of the evening." Guests from the US, 2013
"We had a very good stay at the Quinta. The property is located on the south side of the Douro valley in the heart of the port wine vineyards. The hotel includes the original Quinta buildings with a modern addition which makes use of the local stone to blend in with the vineyard terraces, and it also includes a fabulous pool with views down the Douro valley. From arrival to our leaving the staff were friendly and helpful. Evening dining was simple and traditional, and breakfast was excellent. The Quinta shop is well worth a visit to try some wines and port, and in addition the hotel is well positioned for excursions to other Quintas in and around Pinhão" Guest from Switzerland, 2013.
"We really enjoyed our stay. It's a remarkable hotel with the most friendly and service-minded staff we have ever met! Delicious breakfast buffet, dinner menus providing traditional portuguese meals, tasty wines and above all the generous offerings of the Quinta Port wines made our stay unforgettable. The wonderful pool with the breathtaking view of the river and the vineyards made sunbathing and swimming a most relaxing experience for both body and mind. We also enjoyed very much the spacious room, the well equipped bathroom and the terrace outside our room, which (especially in the evenings) provided privacy and a beautiful view of the Douro river and valley." Guest from Denmark, 2013
