The Douro wine region at its most charming. A renovated manor house B&B, with garden guest rooms, it is located in a hamlet, 4km from the river at Pinhão. The house has uninterrupted views over miles and miles of terraced hillsides, covered in vines, and distant mountains. Walkers will love it here, with country tracks and quiet roads leading straight from the house through the vineyards to neighbouring wine estates and villages. The gardens are a delight- lavender, roses, herbs and shady olive trees. The garden rooms have terracotta tiles and pastel colours, while the main house has a classic Portuguese feel, complete with antique furnishings. Outside, there is a large pool, tennis and squash court, whirlpool and even a rustic sauna inside an old Port barrel! Breakfast is taken on a panoramic covered veranda. Most guests also have dinners here, featuring local ingredients and wines. You may find it hard to leave.

A winding country road climbs the vineyard-covered hills on the way up to the village of Chanceleiros, 4km from the Douro river and the small agricultural town of Pinhão. Right in the heart of the Douro wine region, the natural setting is incredibly scenic. You'll never tire of the changing vistas of river, hills and terraced vines, olive and almond trees.

Walkers will be in heaven here. Right from the house, there are trails passing through villages and around vineyard-covered hills to neighbouring Quinta wine estate. Gentle ambles and rigorous hikes are possible. If you bring a road or mountain bike, you'll love all the curving country roads and hills. The house has its own tennis and squash court, a couple of fitness machines, as well as a large pool, jacuzzi, sauna. At Pinhão (4km) you can hop on to one of the small boats which take tours further up-river (generally leaving mid-morning and in the early afternoon, with a choice of vintage boats, a yacht and traditional wine barrel-transporting barcos rabelos).

Courses at the property
Cookery/ gourmet/ wine-tasting etc

Being in a wine-region, vineyard visits and wine-tasting are a highlight. Harvest-time, with trucks carrying baskets of grapes and the treading of the grapes in some of the old cellars, is a great time to visit. In the small villages, you'll see local rural life, still very authentic and down-to-earth.

GUEST BOOK COMMENTS
"A fantastic manifest of manor house art, exterior art, interior art and garden art combined with breathtaking views over the valley from the dinner terrace and all around the garden. The view is still there from the lovely pool area, sitting in the jacuzzi, from the ping-pong shelter, from the tennis court, the squash court and the small kids playground and so on. Combine this with fantastic food, fantastic owner and staff who makes everyone relax and feel "mother-ed", fantastic rooms, the leave-a-note-of-what-you-consume-bar with for instance vinho verde in the fridge and the house's own ports and moscato on barrels. And not to mention the world's most precious, kind and funny dog to watch, Miss Molly, who our kids fell in love with. Here you reload your batteries in every way no matter what you lack when you arrive. Here you suddenly find yourself talking to other guest and the owners (fluent English, French, German and of course Portuguese spoken by the staff - and probably more languages too) and yet, in one minute you can hide away in lovely couches in the terraced garden if that is what you want. Considering all this - what more could you possibly wish? You look up and the beautiful view is still there. - It's heaven! We will definitely be back and recommend a stay of at least two nights to everyone we know - so that you have at least one full day to enjoy the beauty of this property and it's people and to gain energy and enjoy life and good company." JC Romme, Norway, 2012.
"Nestled among vineyards, high above the Douro river, the location couldn't be more perfect. The charming owner, Ursula, has built something wonderful. She has an eye for detail and for over 12 years has worked hard to build a beautiful guesthouse with happy staff. Her guests marvel at how everything you need is just where it needs to be, with touching details that you'll be telling your friends above forever. From the complimentary Port in the rooms, to the slow, delicious, home-cooked dinners with panoramic views and delicious local wine, this is where you'll fall in love with Portugal." PV, UK/Spain, 2012
