For those wanting to explore, bring a car. There is much to see and do in the area- and an ideal sort of place for those who enjoy scenic views, vineyards, going through small hillside villages. In Pinhão, there are small classic boats which take tours further up-river (generally leaving mid-morning and in the early afternoon, with a choice of vintage boats, a yacht and traditional wine barrel-transporting barcos rabelos). The area is ideal for gentle walks as well as more rigorous hikes and mountain biking. Good walks are available straight out from the house. For all activities, ask for details when staying.

Vineyard visits and wine-tasting are a highlight (some say a must) in the Douro. At the house, you'll be served their own wine made from the vineyards below the house. Wine tastings are also organised at the house, for those interested. Wine-makers come from local wineries to the house. Harvest-time, with trucks carrying baskets of grapes and the treading of the grapes in some of the old cellars, is a great time to visit. In Casal de Loivos and villages all around, you'll see local rural life, still very authentic and down-to-earth.

GPS: Latitude 41.199577, Longitude -7.533397. Exact location shown on map. Casal de Loivos village, above Pinhão (7km). Just under 2 hours from Porto airport. Also accessible by taking the train from Porto to Régua (and then a separate train to Pinhão), where taxis can take you to the hotel. A car is recommended for those wanting to explore the area, but taxis are fine if just spending a couple of days at the hotel and going into Pinhão (7km).

"Great view, amazing service. Ricardo was phenomenally attentive. The setting is really incomparable, and it's a good location if you are trying to organize a variety of visits to the quintas. Ricardo will take care of everything, speaks perfect English, and maintains a wonderful wine cellar from which to choose an afternoon's bottle to relax with on the terrace. The morning light makes for the best pictures, but this is a view to overwhelm your senses and take you out of yourself. We spent two nights here, and could have stayed longer. Rooms are simple and serviceable, good light in the bathroom, and we were never cold. Breakfasts and dinners are straightforward and tasty without being showy. We enjoyed the family style dining, meeting very interesting and charming other travelers. The inn is is a little tricky to find. It is 4.6km from the time you take the sharp turn up the hill. If you see the school/basketball court or the raised cemetary you have gone just a tiny bit too far. If you run out of pavement you've definitely gone too far." Guests from USA, 2012
"We arrived at the hotel in the afternoon and once shown the view immediately decided to stay. Staff are extremely nice and eager to please. It is a converted mansion with just five rooms, and the owners live on the upper floor. The location is great, in the middle of amazing vineyards, the view is superb and the swimming pool a very nice additional. Internet access is free but the wireless network struggles to reach part of the house. Breakfast was varied and well presented, although not the forte of the stay. The rooms are quite small and the bathrooms in need of a refurbishment. Definitely worth the 5 minute drive from Pinhão. We would stay again if in the area." Guest from the UK, 2012.
HIDEAWAY PORTUGAL visit July 2012. There is much to recommend here. Superb hilltop location in the heart of the Douro wine region, with a stunning view of the river, vineyards and Pinhão. An authentic and quiet village setting. A charming, old-world house, very comfortable, well-kept and homely. Lovely terrace and pool, with a view. Attentive, friendly service by Ricardo, manager of the house. Wines from the property's vineyards, dinners on request. A real find and great escape.
